Two Vietnamese twin brothers, Nguyen Duy Quang and Nguyen Quang Minh, both 23, tragically lost their lives in a car crash in Frankfurt, Germany, causing shock and sorrow in the Vietnamese community abroad.
According to German media, the incident occurred when a 23-year-old driver veered into a bicycle lane on Mainzer Landstraße in Frankfurt’s Gallus district, striking three people who were riding electric scooters.
Nguyen Duy Quang and Nguyen Quang Minh, both dental assistant trainees at a clinic in Altona, Hamburg, died from the collision. One of the brothers died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at the hospital. A 27-year-old Vietnamese friend who was with them sustained severe injuries.
The driver, also 23 years old, is suspected of speeding and inhaling nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) before the crash. He faces multiple charges including manslaughter, attempted murder, serious bodily harm, and fleeing the scene.
According to police, the suspect continued driving even after hitting one of the victims, who was seriously injured and lying on the car's hood before falling onto the road. That victim suffered a traumatic brain injury and required a leg amputation.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Vietnamese community in Germany. On social media, hundreds of people have shared the story and offered heartfelt condolences to the victims’ family.
As the victims’ family in Vietnam could not afford the funeral and repatriation costs, the clinic where the twins worked launched an online fundraising campaign. As of July 22, more than 3,000 people had donated over €100,000, with a final target of €130,000. All proceeds will go directly to the victims’ family in Vietnam.
A memorial ceremony is planned at the crash site. Representatives from the Vietnamese communities in Frankfurt and Hamburg are working with local organizations to assist with funeral arrangements and liaise with the victims’ family.
