On the afternoon of July 19, following the sudden storm that caused the Vinh Xanh 58 tour boat to capsize in Ha Long Bay, the Quang Ninh healthcare system sprang into action. Quang Ninh General Hospital promptly activated its red alert protocol, mobilizing all available staff and equipment for emergency treatment of the victims.
Upon receiving notice from the Department of Health, hospital leadership dispatched ambulances, external emergency response teams, medications, and medical equipment to the scene. Emergency units were stationed at Bai Chay Port and the Border Guard Squadron to coordinate with other forces, providing immediate on-site care and swiftly transferring patients to the hospital.
At the hospital, medical staff from the Emergency Department, Orthopedic Trauma, Neurosurgery - Spine Surgery, General Surgery, Intensive Care, and Diagnostic Imaging were fully mobilized. Operating rooms, intensive care units, and laboratory facilities were placed on high alert to meet emergency demands.
By the morning of July 20, the hospital had received 10 patients from the incident. One victim was confirmed dead and transferred to the hospital morgue. The other patients suffered multiple injuries, including trauma to the head, chest, abdomen, limbs, and soft tissues, along with respiratory distress.
Upon arrival, patients were triaged based on the severity of their injuries and underwent X-rays, ultrasounds, lab tests, wound care, bandaging, and continuous monitoring of vital signs.
Nguyen Ba Viet, Director of Quang Ninh General Hospital, confirmed that the patients’ overall condition had stabilized. None were in critical condition. The injured are currently being treated in the Orthopedic Trauma and Neurosurgery - Spine Surgery departments.
Mr. Viet noted that the hospital had declared the situation a large-scale emergency immediately following the directive from provincial leaders and the Department of Health.
The hospital activated its red alert, deploying five ambulances and 150 healthcare staff, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, for field response and patient care. Thanks to coordinated efforts across medical departments, the victims received timely emergency care and treatment.
Medical teams continue to monitor the patients closely, offering psychological support to help them recover from the traumatic experience. The hospital is also working with authorities to confirm the victims’ identities and notify their families as soon as possible.
According to the Navy Command, as of 7:00 a.m. on July 20, the Vinh Xanh 58 boat capsizing in Ha Long Bay had resulted in 10 rescues, 37 deaths, and 5 individuals still missing.
