The Hanoi People’s Committee has officially confirmed the groundbreaking dates for two major urban railway projects: Metro Line 2 (Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao), set to begin construction on October 10, 2025, and Metro Line 5 (Van Cao - Hoa Lac), scheduled for December 19, 2025.
The announcement was issued in a directive from the Office of the Hanoi People’s Committee, following instructions from Vice Chairman Duong Duc Tuan regarding the urgent implementation of key tasks for metro projects slated to begin construction in 2025.
According to a report submitted by the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board on July 11, 2025, the city is reviewing progress on these strategic infrastructure investments.
Vice Chairman Duong Duc Tuan has called on relevant departments, local authorities, and stakeholders to promptly and seriously implement the Chairman’s directives to ensure on-schedule commencement of both metro line construction projects.
Specifically, Metro Line 2 (Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao) will begin on October 10, 2025, and Metro Line 5 (Van Cao - Hoa Lac) on December 19, 2025.
Metro Line 2 spans 11.5 kilometers, with 8.9 kilometers running underground and 2.6 kilometers elevated. The line will include 7 underground stations and 3 elevated ones.
The total project investment is nearly VND 35,600 billion (approximately USD 1.4 billion), reflecting an increase of more than VND 16,000 billion (about USD 630 million) from the initial plan approved in 2008.
Metro Line 5 will require over VND 61,900 billion (around USD 2.44 billion) in total investment. The 38-kilometer route will run from Van Cao through Ngoc Khanh, Thang Long Boulevard, Ring Road 4, and end at Hoa Lac.
It will feature approximately 6 kilometers of underground track, 2 kilometers elevated, and 30 kilometers at-grade. The line will include 21 stations, consisting of 6 underground and 15 above-ground.
