Thirty-nine PhDs, including 37 trained abroad, have applied to teach at universities under the Vietnam National University HCM City. The University of Technology has the highest number of applicants with 24, followed by the University of Natural Sciences with 11, the University of Economics and Law 3, and the University of Health Sciences 1.

The applicants are PhDs graduating from prestigious institutions worldwide, such as Keio University (Japan), University of Virginia (US), National University of Singapore (Singapore), RWTH Aachen University (Germany), University of Bologna (Italy), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia), Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), Sorbonne Paris Nord University & CEA Saclay (France), as well as universities in South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Thailand, and Denmark.

Many of them have outstanding research achievements with tens of international publications in prestigious scientific journals, including Ho Hoang Phuoc PhD (RWTH Aachen University - Germany and University of Bologna - Italy) with 72 international papers; Nguyen Thanh Nho PhD (University of New Caledonia - France) with 62 papers; Nguyen Kim Chung PhD (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - Australia) 42 international publications; Mai Thanh Tam PhD (Kyoto Institute of Technology – Japan) 37; and Truong Trung Kien PhD (University of Texas at Austin - US) 36.

The scientists want to teach in Vietnam under the Vietnam National University HCMC’s VNU350 program.

Under this program, young scientists, in their first two years, will receive funding for a Type C research project (VND200 million); in the third year, a Type B project (up to 1 VND billion); in the fourth year, support for a laboratory for scientific research (up to VND10 billion); and in the fifth year, assistance with procedures for recognition as an Associate Professor at the national level.

For leading scientists, in the first two years, they will receive funding for a Type B research project (up to VND1 billion). In subsequent years, they will receive support for a laboratory for scientific research (up to VND30 billion), assistance in establishing strong research groups, and an opportunity to lead projects at various levels. In addition to these benefits, they will receive salaries and bonuses as per regulations.

12 overseas professors, associate professors to join as visiting lecturers

Twelve professors and associate professors from universities worldwide will participate in the visiting professor program at the Vietnam National University HCMC. They are outstanding scientists and experts from top universities and research institutes such as Oxford, Harvard, Tohoku, KU Leuven, Sydney, Tours, Sains Malaysia, as well as advanced institutes, technology companies, and laboratories in the UK, US, Japan, France, Belgium, Germany, Malaysia, and Australia.

These researchers will teach and conduct research at member schools and units of Vietnam National University HCM City, including the University of Technology, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Health Sciences, An Giang University, and the Institute of Nanotechnology.

Notable professors include:

Professor Sarosh R. Irani, working at Oxford University (UK) and Mayo Clinic (US), specializing in immunology, clinical neurology, neuroscience, autoimmunity, and physiology;

Professor Emilie Allard Vannier, University of Tours (France), specializing in pharmacology and drug formulation;

Associate Professor Matthew Erlich and PhD Galina Gheihman, from Harvard Medical School (USA), specializing in internal pediatrics and medical education;

Associate Professor Tran Hoang Nguyen, a computer science expert from the University of Sydney (Australia);

Associate Professor Fujita Daisuke, Saga University (Japan), researching genetics and molecular biology in agriculture;

PhD Tran Van Xuan, an expert in AI, digital transformation, Industry 4.0/5.0, nuclear engineering, and simulation modeling, currently working at EDF EPR Engineering (UK).

Their expertise spans AI, bioengineering, nanotechnology, geotechnics, theology, immunology, molecular biology, medicine, and metal oxide materials.

The visiting professor program of Vietnam National University HCMC aims to connect global intellectuals, enhance international cooperation, and improve the quality of training and research. The university is determined to appoint 100 visiting professors within five years. Appointees must sign a five-year contract with Vietnam National University HCM City or at least a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension. In 2025 and 2026, the university plans to invite and appoint 50 individuals.

Visiting professors need to work on-site at Vietnam National University HCM City for only 10 days, with the rest conducted remotely. They will be appointed by the Director of Vietnam National University HCM City, supported with legal procedures, visas, immigration processes, travel expenses, and accommodation costs during their stay, and receive competitive remuneration based on teaching hours, co-supervising research, and other activities.
