A colossal statue of Vairocana Buddha, set to be the tallest in the world, is planned for construction atop Nua Mountain in Trieu Son District, Thanh Hoa Province.
The statue will be part of the Am Tien spiritual tourism and historical site complex, named "Huyen Tich Am Tien," which carries a symbolic cultural and religious significance for Vietnam.
The project will have a total investment of VND 35 trillion (approximately USD 1.38 billion).
The Great Vairocana Buddha statue will stand at a total height of 167.5 meters. This includes a 45-meter pedestal, a 13.6-meter lotus base, and the statue itself measuring 108.9 meters from foot to crown.
To give perspective, the statue’s big toe alone will measure 1.67 meters tall – equivalent to the height of an average adult. The structure is expected to set the record for the tallest Buddha statue in the world.
The statue’s intricate design is being developed by a team of sculptors and hundreds of Vietnam’s most renowned bronze artisans, under the direction of sculptor Pham Ba Dua. He is well known for modeling the prototype of the bronze Bodhisattva statue at Bo Da Son, considered Asia’s tallest and located atop Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh.
The statue will be crafted from imported red copper sheets using advanced European high-pressure forging technology. Once completed, the statue’s surface will be silver-plated to create a radiant, white, and graceful figure that will serve as the spiritual centerpiece of the Am Tien tourism area.
In addition to the world’s tallest Buddha statue, the complex will also include “Huyen Tich Village,” a tribute to national heroine Trieu Thi Trinh, also known as Lady Trieu.
Spanning 10 hectares, this village will bring Lady Trieu’s legendary story to life through symbolic architecture and immersive experiences that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Thanh Hoa.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed and open to visitors by the end of 2027.
