The Vietnam women's national football team gained valuable experience despite a 1-4 defeat to German club Werder Bremen in a friendly match held at Hang Day Stadium on the evening of May 16.
This international friendly was part of a series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The match offered the Vietnamese players a chance to challenge a physically superior opponent and refine their tactical play against a top-level team.
Vietnam entered the match without several key players from the Ho Chi Minh City club, including Huynh Nhu and Chuong Thi Kieu, who were absent due to preparations for the upcoming Asian tournament.
From the start, Werder Bremen demonstrated physical dominance and higher stamina. In the 15th minute, player Walking opened the scoring with a curling effort after sustained pressure from the visiting side.
Vietnam struggled with physical duels and aerial challenges due to a size disadvantage. In the 50th minute, goalkeeper Kim Thanh saved an initial shot from Sophia, but Larissa was quick to follow up and double the lead for Bremen.
Coach Mai Duc Chung made tactical and personnel adjustments in the second half to bolster Vietnam’s performance. In the 64th minute, Ngoc Minh Chuyen received a through ball from a teammate, sprinted past the defense, and finished with a brilliant diagonal strike to bring the score to 2-1.
However, Werder Bremen continued to apply pressure. Larissa Muhlhaus scored her second of the match in the 81st minute from a free-kick. In added time (90+3), Papai sealed the 4-1 victory with a final goal.
