Vietnam's passport has moved up seven spots in the latest Henley Passport Index, securing 84th place worldwide. This marks a notable improvement from its previous 91st position in the first quarter of the year.

The Q3 2025 update of the Henley Passport Index, released on July 22, shows that Vietnamese passport holders can now access 51 out of 227 countries and territories without needing a visa, or by obtaining an e-visa, visa on arrival, or electronic travel permit. Visa-exempt or simplified destinations include ASEAN member states, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Iran.

Vietnam’s passport ranking has fluctuated over the past 19 years, but it has never risen above 78 or fallen below 94. The current 84th position reflects a positive upward trend over the past two years. The highest rank Vietnam achieved was 78, maintained in both 2006 and 2007.

Meanwhile, the United States is on the verge of dropping out of the top 10 most powerful passports, a significant decline from its number-one ranking in 2014. This is the lowest position the U.S. has held in the past 20 years.

Singapore continues to lead the world with the most powerful passport, granting access to 193 destinations without requiring a visa or with only minimal entry requirements such as e-visas.

Japan and South Korea are tied at second place, offering access to 190 destinations. Several European Union nations - Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Finland - occupy third place, each allowing travel to 189 destinations visa-free.

Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and Sweden share the fourth position with visa-free access to 188 destinations. In fifth place are Greece, Switzerland, and New Zealand, whose passports grant visa-free entry to 187 locations.

The Henley Passport Index, developed by Henley & Partners, is one of several global rankings that assess travel freedom based on the number of destinations a passport holder can enter without needing a prior visa.
