A hidden military stronghold beneath limestone cliffs

Located at km12 of Route 20 - Quyet Thang in Phong Nha commune, Quang Tri province, the Command Cave is a natural limestone cavern nestled within the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

During the war against the United States, the cave was transformed by Station 14 of Corps 559 into a fortified, seven-level “strategic logistics base,” known by various names such as N.H Cave, N.H Warehouse, or simply “7-level Cave.”

During the war, it was used as a secure hub for gathering and storing weapons, equipment, and goods en route to support southern battlefields. The site also served as a shelter and venue for secret, high-level meetings.

Recreating the wartime logistics command center

To preserve and honor the legacy of the Truong Son battlefield, the “Legendary Truong Son Trail - Command Cave” eco-tourism project was established.

Each level of the cave is organized and recreated to reflect the N.H logistics depot of the past, featuring areas for munitions and equipment storage, soldier resting quarters, and strategic planning rooms.

The exhibit area dedicated to Route 20 - Quyet Thang displays historical tools and construction equipment once used by soldiers, youth volunteers, and civilian laborers in building and maintaining the trail.

Another section showcases strategic logistics goods, displaying weapons and supplies that were transported along Route 20 to support the southern frontlines.

The bomb shell display area features remnants of various bombs and artillery shells dropped by US forces on Route 20 - Quyet Thang.

Immersive historical experience with VR and interactive exhibits

One of the standout features of the site is the VR360 theater, where visitors board a ZIL-131 truck and are immersed in a virtual reality journey that vividly re-creates the heroic atmosphere of Route 20 during wartime.

The experience is divided into segments titled “Lifeline of the battlefield,” “The roar of war,” and “Rebirth in peace,” each capturing a different phase of the trail’s historical significance.

Veteran Nguyen Huy Du shared, “The ‘Legendary Truong Son Trail - Command Cave’ is a truly creative and compelling way to preserve and convey priceless historical values, offering an authentic and vivid depiction of Truong Son.”

“This project not only lets our generation relive the past, but also enables visitors - especially the younger generation - to truly feel and understand Truong Son on a deeper, more emotional level,” he added.
