Professor Nguyen Buu Trieu, one of the two pioneering founders of Vietnam’s urology and andrology field, passed away in Hanoi on the evening of July 16, at the age of 102. His passing marks a profound loss for the Vietnamese medical community and generations of students he inspired.
His funeral will take place from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM on July 21 at Funeral House No. 5, Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.
Professor Nguyen Buu Trieu formerly served as Head of the Department of Surgery at Hanoi Medical University and was the first President of the Vietnam Urology - Nephrology Association (2000–2010). Throughout his life, he was not only a respected educator but also a shining example of humility, dedication, and tireless contribution to Vietnamese medicine, particularly during the country’s most challenging years.
Professor Trieu’s life of dedication is closely tied to significant milestones in the history of the Department of Surgery at Hanoi Medical University. In 1950, during the Border Campaign, he joined frontline medical teams.
Following the 1954 victory at Dien Bien Phu, he returned to Hanoi and, alongside colleagues at Phu Doan Hospital (now Viet Duc University Hospital), laid the groundwork for Vietnam's surgical field. He worked closely with renowned figures such as the late Professor Ton That Tung, the late Professor Nguyen Trinh Co, and Professor Dang Hanh De in advancing medical education and surgical techniques.
Under the direction of Professor Nguyen Trinh Co, Professor Trieu contributed to the development of the Surgery Department at Bach Mai Hospital, expanding the foundation of medical education and clinical practice. During the resistance war against the United States, he and his colleagues worked relentlessly under difficult conditions, providing frontline medical support and helping to realize the Ministry of Health’s vision of mainstreaming surgery throughout the national healthcare system.
In 1980, he was conferred the title of Associate Professor by the State, and in 1984, he was promoted to full Professor. After the passing of Professor Nguyen Trinh Co, he took over as Head of the Department of Surgery from 1984 to 1998.
For his tremendous contributions, Professor Trieu was awarded the Second-class Independence Medal. At the 75th anniversary of the Department of Surgery (Hanoi Medical University) in 2022, he received heartfelt tributes from the Ministry of Education and Training and generations of students for the invaluable legacy he left behind.
The passing of Professor Nguyen Buu Trieu is a great loss to Vietnamese medicine. His unwavering dedication and exemplary spirit will forever serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of doctors.
