On the morning of May 31, the whale was discovered stranded at the mouth of Ninh Chu Beach, located in Tri Hai commune, Ninh Hai district, Ninh Thuan province.

According to local residents, the whale was still alive when it was first spotted. Many fishermen tried to push it back into deeper waters. However, by the time they reached Khanh Hoi village, the whale had died and was subsequently brought ashore.

Fishermen then transported the whale’s body to Ong Nam Hai Mausoleum, where a traditional burial ceremony was held in line with long-standing local beliefs. This marked the first recorded instance of a whale becoming stranded and dying in this coastal area.

Elderly fishermen in Tri Hai commune shared that, according to local folk beliefs, whales - referred to as “Ong fish” - are considered sacred animals that protect fishermen at sea.

Whenever an “Ong fish” dies and washes ashore, locals conduct solemn rituals and regard it as a sign of good fortune, signaling a season of calm seas and bountiful catches ahead.
