Nguyen The Quan is the only Vietnamese team member to win a gold medal at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)

Quan is the only Vietnamese team member to win a gold medal at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). This achievement helped Vietnam rank among the top 10 countries with the highest achievements at IPhO 2025. Quan also scored the second-highest in the practical test worldwide.

With this result, the Nghe An student secured both international and regional Olympic gold medals in 2025.

In May, Quan won a gold medal at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Physics Olympiad (with the highest score in the Vietnamese team), contributing to Vietnam's ranking among the top five countries and territories. In grade 11, Quan also earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad.

Quan said he was thrilled and quite surprised to be the only Vietnamese student to win gold at IPhO.

Cao Thi Lan Thanh, principal of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, noted that this result doesn’t surprise those who have followed and supported him.

"Quan consistently demonstrates effort, passion, and an unwavering desire to conquer great heights. This is a well-deserved result of his hard work. His achievements will inspire students at our school to pursue their passions with determination," Thanh said.

Despite being exempted from the national academic competition in grade 12 thanks to his bronze medal at the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad, Quan still attended the competition and won first place. He also achieved the highest score in the national team selection for regional and international Olympiads before securing two gold medals.

Originally a math major in secondary school, Quan switched to physics to pursue his dream of attending a gifted high school. The more he studied physics, the more he finds it fascinating.

The learning subject helps him better understand the world, explain life’s phenomena, and teach him to approach things with logical, creative, and scientifically curious thinking. He also showcased his talent with notable achievements in grade 9, such as first place in the city-level physics competition and an honorable mention at the provincial level.

Remarkably, Quan became the top scorer in the 2022 entrance exam to the physics-specialized class at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted.

Regarding his study approach, Quan emphasized the importance of self-study. "Besides absorbing knowledge from teachers, you need strong determination and self-study," he said.

With two Olympic gold medals in 2025, Quan has earned direct admission to domestic universities. He is considering studying physics at the University of Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University. Looking further, if given the opportunity, he hopes to study abroad to broaden his knowledge and develop himself.
