With digital transformation now essential for the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam and across Asia, choosing the right strategy and partner is a critical step toward breakthrough growth. In this interview with Vietnamnet, Mr. Pham Tien Thanh - CEO of Saigon Technology - shares valuable insights on major technology trends, common challenges, and practical advice for SMEs embarking on their digital transformation journey.

From your perspective, what are the biggest digital transformation trends currently shaping the SME landscape in Vietnam and across Asia?

In recent years, we’ve seen SMEs throughout Vietnam and Asia embrace digital transformation not just to improve efficiency but as a key survival strategy. The three most impactful trends are:

Cloud-first strategies: SMEs are moving away from costly on-premise systems in favor of scalable, cloud-based infrastructure, enabling faster deployment and lower upfront investment.

AI-driven business intelligence: Even small companies are starting to use AI for customer insights, predictive analytics, and automation, creating a more level playing field.

Borderless work models: The rise of remote development teams and offshore partnerships has allowed SMEs to tap into global talent and reduce time-to-market.

These trends are transforming digital adoption from a “nice-to-have” into a competitive necessity.

What common challenges do SMEs face when beginning their digital transformation journey, and how can they overcome them?

The biggest challenge is often a lack of alignment between technology and business goals. Many SMEs adopt tools without a clear strategy, leading to wasted investment and poor adoption.

Other common challenges include limited internal tech capacity, budget constraints, and cultural resistance to change.

The key to success lies in starting small with a clear return on investment (ROI), working with experienced tech consultants, and ensuring leadership alignment around a unified vision. At Saigon Technology, we often help clients by creating a minimum viable tech roadmap that demonstrates value early and builds momentum.

In your opinion, what are the most critical technologies that SMEs should prioritize today?

It depends on the business model, but I believe three technologies are essential across most industries:

Cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure): These offer scalable, secure, and cost-effective infrastructure.

AI-powered automation: For marketing, customer support, and data analytics - even SMEs can benefit from AI when applied strategically.

Custom web and mobile applications: Tailored tools often deliver greater value than off-the-shelf solutions.

The key is not just to adopt these technologies but to integrate them in ways that address core business problems.

How do you see Vietnam’s position in the regional tech landscape in terms of supporting SME digital growth?

Vietnam is becoming a regional tech enabler. With a young, skilled workforce and a rapidly developing digital ecosystem, more Vietnamese firms - including Saigon Technology - are emerging as trusted partners for digital execution across the region.

Government support, improved infrastructure, and an active startup scene are all contributing to this momentum. Our country is transitioning from a low-cost outsourcing hub to a value-added technology partner, especially for SMEs in Singapore, Japan, and the U.S.

What is your message to aspiring tech entrepreneurs or SME leaders navigating digital disruption today?

Start with the problem, not the technology. Don’t feel pressured to adopt AI or automation just because it’s trending - focus on what truly creates value for your customers.

Also, surround yourself with smart partners. You don’t have to build everything in-house. Leveraging external expertise helps you scale faster and more efficiently.

Most importantly, stay adaptable. The digital world evolves rapidly, but opportunities always favor those willing to learn and adapt.

How should SMEs choose a digital transformation consulting partner, considering this is a critical factor that can significantly influence the success of their transformation journey?

Choosing the right consulting partner is indeed one of the most critical success factors for SMEs navigating digital change. Based on my experience working with companies across Vietnam, the U.S., and Asia, I would recommend SMEs consider the following:

Look for sector-specific experience. A good consultant should understand the unique needs of your industry - whether it’s manufacturing, logistics, or e-commerce.

Evaluate their technical depth and execution capability. The partner should offer more than just strategy; they must be able to implement, iterate, and support the technology end-to-end.

Ask for proof of results. Review case studies, references, and tangible business outcomes the firm has delivered. Good partners proudly share real client success stories.

Prioritize communication and transparency. Digital transformation is a long-term journey - your partner should communicate clearly, manage change effectively, and involve your internal teams.

Ensure a cultural fit. Especially in Vietnam, where local business values are important, having a consulting team that aligns with your company culture enhances trust and adoption.

As SMEs across Vietnam and Asia face unprecedented challenges and opportunities in the digital era, the insights shared by Mr. Pham Tien Thanh offer a valuable roadmap for navigating this journey with confidence. With the right strategy, trusted partners, and a commitment to innovation, digital transformation can evolve from a survival tactic to a catalyst for long-term growth and global competitiveness.
