Apple is preparing to equip its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with a high-end display coating that enhances scratch resistance and reduces glare - one of the most anticipated upgrades of this generation.

According to reliable sources, Apple has successfully resolved previous production yield issues related to this display technology, enabling large-scale manufacturing for the Pro models.

New display coating confirmed for iPhone 17 Pro series

The anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coating was first leaked in 2024. Reports suggest that it offers better durability than the current Ceramic Shield, making the iPhone 17 Pro models more resistant to wear and tear over time.

Initially, Apple struggled to scale the complex coating process, which delayed production and raised concerns that the feature might be scrapped. However, improvements in the manufacturing process have now made it viable for mass production.

Sources told MacRumors that Apple suppliers have achieved sufficient yields for this new glass technology, clearing the way for its deployment on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The base models - iPhone 17 and the rumored iPhone 17 Air - will not feature this upgrade.

Current iPhones still lack advanced anti-reflective features

While existing iPhones include an oleophobic coating to repel fingerprints and a Ceramic Shield for durability, Apple has yet to invest significantly in anti-reflective display technology for iPhones, unlike its iPads and MacBooks.

Meanwhile, Apple’s main competitor Samsung has already integrated Gorilla Glass Armor in its latest smartphones - a material that cuts reflections by up to 75% and enhances screen contrast in bright environments.

Apple’s implementation of similar technology on the iPhone 17 Pro line would not only reduce glare and reflection, improving visibility outdoors, but also enhance scratch resistance, long-term screen clarity, and overall viewing experience with deeper contrast and less glare. This move would help position Apple more competitively against premium Android devices.

Feature limited to premium models

By reserving the upgraded display exclusively for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple continues its strategy of differentiating its product lines by offering the most advanced features only on its most expensive models.

This new scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coating is expected to be one of the standout features of the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. Now that Apple has overcome previous technical and production challenges, the company appears ready to bring this enhanced display experience to users - offering a more durable, clearer, and outdoor-friendly iPhone.

Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 17 series this September. This year’s lineup is expected to include the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air, with the most significant upgrades reserved for the Pro models.
