On the morning of May 19, the Hanoi People’s Committee held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tu Lien Bridge project and its connecting roads, with a total investment of VND 20,171 billion (approx. USD 800 million). The bridge is expected to be inaugurated in 2027.

Attending the ceremony were Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Hanoi Party Secretary Bui Thi Minh Hoai, and leaders from central ministries and local departments.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh described Tu Lien Bridge as a strategically vital transportation project that will enhance regional connectivity within Hanoi and between the capital and other northern provinces.

He instructed contractors to not only stay on schedule but to aim for early completion.

“This bridge must be completed within 24 months. The total construction area is just over 5km, so we must maximize shift work and employ the most advanced construction technologies to shorten timelines,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of ensuring top-tier quality, technical standards, and aesthetics - without allowing budget overruns.

Highlighting its symbolic role, the Prime Minister noted: “This bridge must be more visually striking than Nhat Tan Bridge. Adjustments to its appearance should be made during construction to give it a unique identity worthy of the capital.”

The Tu Lien Bridge and road project spans approximately 5.15km, connecting Nghi Tam Road in Tay Ho District to Truong Sa Road in Dong Anh District. It comprises four components: three land clearance sub-projects and one main construction sub-project.

According to Hanoi Chairman Tran Sy Thanh, Tu Lien is one of 18 planned road bridges crossing the Red River. It will play a critical role in linking both sides of the river and integrating with key regional infrastructure such as the National Exhibition Center, Gia Binh Airport (Bac Ninh Province), and other northern and northeastern provinces.

The bridge will also help alleviate congestion on existing crossings and support Hanoi’s socio-economic growth targets, including GDP growth of over 8% by 2025 and double-digit growth in subsequent years.

“This is the first Red River bridge to break ground in 2025. Hanoi is actively preparing to start construction on six additional major bridges this year, including Hong Ha and Me So (Ring Road 4), Thuong Cat and Ngoc Hoi (Ring Road 3.5), and the Tran Hung Dao and Van Phuc bridges,” Chairman Thanh added.

Designed as a cable-stayed structure with twin-plane cables and crisscrossing patterns on a single visual axis, Tu Lien Bridge is expected to become an architectural landmark. Once completed in 2027, it will stand as a new symbol of Hanoi’s progress and ambition.
