In the video, the elderly woman, her white hair tied back neatly, props up a long ladder and climbs over the gate, seemingly without hesitation. Many viewers speculated that this was not the first time she had attempted such an escape.

The video, originally shared by Do Phuong Linh (18, from Yen Bai Province), has racked up 4.3 million views, 112,000 likes, and thousands of curious and amused comments.

Some of the most popular reactions included: “With skills like that, this can’t be her first time,” “Did she plan a way to get down after climbing up?” and “I need to see how she landed on the other side!”

According to Linh, the video was taken from a family surveillance camera on May 17. The woman featured is her paternal grandmother, Vu Thi Hat, who is 90 years old.

Mrs. Hat has 12 children - 11 daughters and 1 son - and currently lives with her son’s family in Van Yen district, Yen Bai province.

Although still physically strong for her age, Vu Thi Hat is no longer fully lucid. Her memory fluctuates, so the family often locks the front gate when no one is home to prevent her from wandering off and potentially getting lost or hurt.

“That afternoon, while we were all away at school or work, my grandmother used a ladder to climb over the gate. She wanted to go to church, but when she learned there was no service that day, she decided to take a walk,” Linh recounted. “Earlier, she tried using a chair to climb over but it didn’t work, so she switched to a ladder.”

Shortly afterward, the family discovered she had left and spread out to search for her. After just over an hour, they found her and brought her home safely.

Linh explained that while her grandmother often goes out with the company of family members, she had previously wandered off alone.

On one occasion, she even got lost, prompting a stressful search by relatives. In another instance, she was hit by a vehicle and suffered a broken bone, requiring surgery and a prosthetic to walk again.

“We also keep the gate locked to avoid strangers disturbing her when she’s home alone, or worse, her going out unsupervised and facing danger,” Linh added. “Some people misunderstood the video and made negative comments. I just want to clarify the situation.”

Most of Mrs. Hat’s children live nearby and take turns looking after her with great affection and care.

Now at 90, she has around 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On special occasions, the whole family gathers at her house to celebrate together.

“I was lucky to be raised by my grandmother. She took care of me throughout my childhood. She’s gentle and always puts her children and grandchildren first, saving the best for us,” Linh shared.
