Occupying an area of approximately 5,000 square meters, the nearly 100-year-old Con Ga Church (Chicken Church), also known as the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Bari, stands as a striking example of French colonial architecture in the heart of Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province.
Located on Tran Phu Street, the church derives its nickname from a 66 cm-tall bronze rooster statue perched atop its bell tower. Over the decades, this religious landmark has become one of Da Lat’s must-visit destinations, drawing countless visitors with its historical charm and serene presence.
According to religious texts, the rooster in the New Testament symbolizes repentance, referencing the biblical story of Saint Peter denying Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. This powerful symbol adds a meaningful focal point to the architectural composition of the church.
Constructed in 1931 and completed in 1942, the church showcases French architectural elements with a rectangular design, extending 65 meters in length. The bell tower rises to a height of 47 meters, offering panoramic views of Da Lat from its summit.
Inside, the church features a main nave flanked by two smaller aisles. Symmetrically arranged columns and vaulted ceilings create a sense of balance and solemnity. At the center is the altar adorned with a statue of Christ and a crucifix, where key religious ceremonies are held. Additional space is designated for the choir, especially during festive occasions.
Blending soft Romanesque forms with elegant Gothic details, the Con Ga Church presents a distinctly European ambiance. This is further enhanced by vibrant stained-glass windows, all handcrafted at a French workshop. The original architectural elements, including bas-reliefs, decorative wall features, and deep brown wooden doors, have been carefully preserved over the years.
During her first visit to Da Lat, Nguyen Thu Huong, a tourist from Hanoi, described the city’s atmosphere as refreshing and filled with local character.
“I’ve traveled to many places, but the timeless and sacred beauty of Con Ga Church truly impressed me. From its architectural design to the surrounding scenery, everything makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a European corner right here in Da Lat,” she shared.
The church’s interior is spacious and tranquil, providing an ideal environment for religious services. A small section serves as a choir performance area on special occasions and holidays.
Beyond its role as a place of worship, the church’s grounds also offer a peaceful retreat. A side garden features a statue of the Virgin Mary beneath pine trees - a beloved spot where locals often gather to offer flowers and prayers.
Behind the church is the “Phaolo Bookstore,” which houses religious texts and welcomes both visitors and locals, fostering cultural and spiritual values in the heart of Da Lat.
Father Phaolo Pham Cong Phuong, parish priest of Da Lat Cathedral, shared that the church serves around 6,000 parishioners, with most ceremonies held on weekends. The church also remains open to both domestic and international visitors free of charge.
