Since beginning his journey in September 2024 from Stratford-upon-Avon, Luke Deakin has walked across eight countries and continues toward his ultimate destination: Vietnam.

Deakin plans to walk more than 15,000 kilometers across 23 countries, only using a ferry twice during the entire journey. So far, the British traveler has completed his trek through France, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece.

His next stop is Turkey, where he expects to spend about two months tackling the next segment of his long-haul adventure.

After Turkey, Deakin will pass through Georgia and Azerbaijan before taking a ferry across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan.

Central Asia is expected to bring a host of challenges, including vast deserts, extreme weather conditions, and limited access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

In a recent video shared on his personal page, Deakin said: “I’ve just completed the challenge of walking through Europe in the cold winter. Now, things are about to get much tougher. My next destination is Turkey. After that, I’ll cross deserts into the Middle East, then make my way through India before braving temperatures over 40°C and the brutal monsoon season in Southeast Asia. Stay tuned to see how far I go.”

Once he reaches Ho Chi Minh City, he aims to continue north to Hanoi, marking the final destination in his extraordinary journey.

Deakin chose Vietnam as the final stop because he once lived in Hanoi for about a year. It’s the city he says he loves more than anywhere else in the world.

To Deakin, Vietnam feels like a second home. That’s why he chose to begin this incredible journey as a way of “coming home.”

Luke reflects: “Walking helps you see the world in a completely different way. You meet people only a walker would encounter. You notice the little things and truly experience a country rather than just passing through.”

As of April 30, Deakin has been walking for 230 days and has about 7,500 kilometers left to complete his goal. Under his latest post, most netizens expressed awe and admiration for his resilience and deep passion.
