CNET recently released a list of the best iPhones currently available, following hands-on testing and evaluation.

At $599, the newly launched iPhone 16E has become Apple's most affordable iPhone, although it is still priced higher than most budget smartphones, which typically cost under $500. The 16E features a single camera and shares the same processor as the iPhone 16, but lacks some premium features like MagSafe.

At $799, the iPhone 16 serves as a significant upgrade, offering an ultra-wide camera, MagSafe support, and new action buttons for shortcuts like flashlight activation.

For $999, the iPhone 16 Pro offers a new display, an upgraded main camera, and 5x optical zoom on both the Pro and Pro Max versions. Apple also continues to sell older models like the iPhone 15 at reduced prices.

Best overall choice: iPhone 16

The iPhone 16, priced at $799, is considered the best choice for most users. It comes in two sizes: the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 16 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus, which starts at $899. Both models are equipped with new ultra-wide cameras that perform well in low light and offer impressive macro photography capabilities.

Both models also include AI tools to help compose text, erase unwanted photo details, and summarize messages and websites. The latest iOS 18.2 update also integrates ChatGPT directly into Siri.

Additional features include an Action Button customizable for tasks like turning on the flashlight, recording voice memos, or switching Focus Modes, and a new Camera Control button for adjusting zoom and activating Visual Intelligence, which provides information about subjects in the frame, similar to Google Lens.

Although the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus lack an always-on display and have slower wired charging speeds, they remain powerful and appealing options.

Best premium choice: iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max introduce significant upgrades, including larger displays (6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max), longer battery life, and enhanced camera systems with high-resolution slow-motion recording. Both models feature the new Camera Control button and advanced Apple Intelligence tools.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max share the same camera system, unlike the previous iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Users should consider factors like screen size, battery life, and price when choosing between them.

One downside is that the iPhone 16 Pro still offers only 128GB of base storage at a starting price of $1,000. Its color options are limited, and the new Camera Control button may not always offer the smoothest shooting experience. Nevertheless, for those who can afford it, the iPhone 16 Pro remains an outstanding choice.

Best choice for users upgrading from iPhone 11 or older: iPhone 16E

Priced at $599, the iPhone 16E combines components and features from previous generations, featuring the design and screen of the iPhone 14, the A18 chip from the iPhone 16, and a single camera without MagSafe.

For users upgrading from an iPhone SE, iPhone 11, or older models, the iPhone 16E offers a significant boost in performance, battery life, and camera quality (despite the absence of an ultra-wide camera). It is also a suitable choice for those switching from Android to iPhone.

Consumers can save even more by taking advantage of promotions, discounts, or installment plans.

Best iPhone under $700: iPhone 15

With the release of the iPhone 16, Apple has reduced the iPhone 15’s price to $699 - a $100 drop from its original launch price - and it may decrease further.

The iPhone 15 features Dynamic Island, a convenient USB-C charging port, a high-resolution camera with sharp digital zoom, and the powerful A16 Bionic chip.

It is available in two sizes: 6.1 inches (iPhone 15) and 6.7 inches (iPhone 15 Plus). It also includes a second-generation ultra-wideband chip, making it easier to locate friends or family members in crowds.

For those using an older iPhone, the iPhone 15 remains a worthwhile upgrade.

Other iPhone options

Although Apple no longer officially sells the iPhone 15 Pro, it can still be found at carriers and third-party retailers.

The iPhone 15 Pro remains a strong choice in 2025, offering a 120Hz ProMotion always-on display, a powerful A17 Pro chip, and top-tier camera capabilities. It also features safety functions like Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite.

If found at a good price, the iPhone 15 Pro remains an excellent choice this year.

For those interested in newer models, it may be worth waiting until September for the release of the iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, which promise many new upgrades, especially in the Pro versions.
