Recently, at Binh Duong General Hospital, a remarkable surgery transformed the life of X.B.D, a 22-year-old who had been living with a massive mandibular tumor measuring 30x25 cm for five years.

The tumor had severely distorted his facial structure, misaligned his teeth, impaired his ability to eat and speak, and left him socially withdrawn and deeply self-conscious about his appearance. Once full of life, he had become quiet and avoided eye contact with others.

Recognizing the severity of his condition, a multidisciplinary team of doctors - spanning Orthopedics, Surgery and Anesthesia, ENT, Maxillofacial, Hematology, Nutrition, and hospital leadership - collaborated to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Their goal went beyond removing the tumor: they aimed to restore both the function and aesthetics of his face, helping him reclaim confidence and social ease.

The surgery lasted over 10 hours and involved complex challenges. The tumor, deeply embedded in critical anatomical structures, was fully removed.

The centerpiece of the procedure was an advanced microsurgical technique using a free fibula flap - harvesting a section of fibula bone along with its blood vessels from the patient’s right leg and transplanting it to his lower jaw.

The harvested blood vessels were meticulously connected to facial vessels to keep the graft alive. The fibula bone was then shaped and secured with plates and screws to recreate the natural curve of the jaw, ensuring both chewing function and facial symmetry.

Dr. Vo Thai Trung, head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, shared that this case was technically demanding and emotionally intense. The team had to carefully manage a complex tumor while delivering optimal reconstruction results.

Witnessing the young man smile again, free from shame and self-doubt, left the entire team deeply moved.

After surgery, D. made a smooth recovery. On the day of discharge, he smiled confidently - his new face harmonious and refined. From a quiet life in the highlands, he now has a fresh start and a new chance to chase youthful dreams without the burden of physical insecurity.
